'Bow' Series Urban Furniture
First Prize, Tallinn Module Urban Furniture Competition 2005
Estonia, 2005
The project has been developed specifically for Tallinn and, besides its functionality, it represents a concentrate of the City’s spirit as we perceive it.
Formally, the geometry of the project is inspired by Tallinn’s age-old connection with ships and the sea. At a more profound level, what makes the project Tallinn-specific is the way it uses simple shapes and means in order to achieve an elegant and functional result.
Developing the family of objects we intended to achieve an unifying factor in the complexity of Tallinn’s urban space. The series is intended to adapt in each area of the City, both the Medieval Centre and in the less prestigious newer areas of the City – and hopefully to enhance the quality of both.
We have interpreted and adapted the notion of Module in order to realise an unitary family of urban furniture, despite the wide range of different sizes and functions of the objects.
The result is embodied in three different versions of the same concept, linked to each other by a common shape and geometry, common materials and finishes, and a common simplicity of construction.
Each group of the family is defined by a typical section (see cover drawing). The use of this typical section ensures constructive easiness and shared aesthetics for a whole variety of similar-size objects. The modular section forms a structure which can be used for a variety of assemblies. Thus an excellent flexibility is achieved using a simple technology and without sacrificing the common aesthetics shared by the products.
Based on this principle, the possibilities of developing various objects are unlimited.
