Two pavillions

competition project
for Art City
Festival
Calgary, AB, Canada
2002

Bridge

A regular bridge is a passage between two buildings – if the bridge is a ‘+15’ - or shores.
This pavilion is an abstracted bridge which contains in itself its two ends; by ‘crossing’ it one crosses the gap between him/herself and his/her own image as reflected by the work of art. Thus creating a link between the work of art and the City around, link passing through the soul itself of anyone of us.

The pavilion, built in simple OSB panels on wood structure and polycarbonate, can host almost any kind of art work, is easy to disassemble and reassemble, and accessible for disabled persons. Its construction cost is expected to be under C$ 7000.

Dialogue

The relation linking the City and the continuously changing flow of people that experience it could be defined as a dialogue in which both participants are constantly changed by one another.
As the solid buildings contrast with our own fragile bodies, but each depend on the other for its/his/her own existence, the two areas sustaining the translucent roof of the pavilion contrast each other in terms of formal language. One’s openness and ‘fragility’ is opposed the other’s solidity and containment – but one has no sense without the other.
The pavilion aims to express in a concentrate way this particular kind of dialogue. Together with the work of art and in a permanent dialogue with it, it will work almost like a Japanese haiku, that in few words stirs a thought in one’s mind.

The pavilion, built in simple OSB and polycarbonate panels on wood structure, can host almost any kind of art work, is easy to disassemble and reassemble, and accessible for disabled persons. Its construction cost is expected to be under C$ 9000.
